Riley Filion, Jackson Dakin win top athletic awards at Queen's

Two athletes who have distinguished themselves on the national stage received the top athletic honours bestowed by Queen's University Wednesday at the 77th annual Colour Night at the Ambassador Hotel.
Riley Filion of the women's soccer team was presented with the PHE 55 Alumni Award as the university's top female athlete and men's volleyball player Jackson Dakin was named winner of the Jenkins Trophy as the top male varsity athlete.
In her four years at Queen's, Filion, a nursing student from Alexandria, Ont., went to three national championship tournaments with the Gaels, winning twice and capturing a silver medal at the other. At each, she was selected to the tournament all-star team.
Filion, whose overtime goal gave Queen's the 2010 Canadian Interuniversity Sport title, was conference rookie of the year 2009, its most valuable player in 2011, a three-time conference all-star and a three-time academic all-Canadian.
Dakin, a fifth-year setter working on his Masters in engineering chemistry, is a four-time academic all-Canadian. The native of Courtenay, B.C., was a member of two Ontario University Athletics championship teams and this year was a conference all-star and its nominee for the Dale Iwanoczko sportsmanship award.
Rugby player Nadia Popov of Newmarket and basketball player Sukhpreet Singh of Toronto were named winners of the Alfie Pierce trophies as female and male rookies of the year.
Popov was third in the OUA with 52 points in the regular year and she helped her team reach the national championship tournament.
Singh, this year's OUA East rookie of the year, started at point guard for the Gaels from the beginning of the season. He averaged 29 minutes, 12.2 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game, and was sixth in the conference in both assists (75) and free throws made (68).
