Today in Kingston junior hockey playoff history

Posted: March 28th, 2013 @ 12:00pm

Today's installment in a daily feature that looks back at this date in Kingston junior hockey playoff history.

Friday, March 26, 1976

The Kingston Canadians discover that Ottawa 67's goalie Jim Fraser is human after all.

After he faced 85 shots in the first two games of the series, Fraser is solved for three unanswered goals in the third period as Kingston claimed a 6-3 victory before 9,316 fans at the Ottawa Civic Centre. The victory allowed Kingston to tie the eight-point series 3-3.

Bob Mears made 37 saves for the win while Tony McKegney and Barry Scully, with two goals apiece, Mark Suzor and Ken Linseman scored for the Canadians. Daryl Benjamin had three assists. Larry Skinner, Doug Wilson and Behn Wilson scored for Ottawa.

"Mears stole the limelight from Fraser with his brilliant goaltending display," Art Wright wrote in the Whig-Standard. "He made two great saves off Doug Wilson, one on a breakaway, and two others of United States Olympic-team star Bob Miller, who was left unprotected in the slot."
