Frontenacs 50th

Posted: March 28th, 2013 @ 12:11pm

Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:

Fifty years ago today, Thursday, March 28, 1963

On the way back to Kingston, the Frontenacs stop at North Bay hospital at 1:30 a.m. to get medical attention for Jean-Paul Parise, who was complaining of a severe headache. Parise struck his head on the ice after being checked by a Sudbury defenceman early in Wednesday's 5-5 tie at Sudbury.

Parise, who stayed in the game long enough to score a goal, remained at the hospital for observation while the team continued back to Kingston.

Teams enter the final weekend of the regular schedule with Kingston leading Hull-Ottawa by six points in the battle for first place. It's a monumental turnaround for the Frontenacs, who trailed the Canadiens by seven points at the end of January. Kingston has two games left to play, both at home, Saturday night against Hull-Ottawa and Sunday afternoon against Sudbury. The Canadiens have three games remaining, in Kingston Saturday, Sunday in Hull against last-place St. Louis and Monday night in Sudbury.
