Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:
Fifty years ago today, Friday, March 29, 1963
Hull-Ottawa announces it will have a new coach for the remainder of the season. Long-time coach Frank Mario, late of the Peterborough Petes junior club, has been reassigned to handle the bench chores for the Canadiens, taking over from Billy Carter, who had been serving as a playing coach.
In Kingston, meanwhile, the Frontenacs are eager to avenge defeat a year ago in a Memorial Centre showdown with Hull-Ottawa for first place. The rematch takes place tomorrow night and Kingston needs a tie to claim top spot and a first-round playoff bye.
"Guys like Harry Sinden, Wayne Schultz, Don Blackburn and Pete Panagabko remember - not with any particular fondness - last year's game in which Canadiens came from behind to whip Kingston," Allan Dickie wrote in the Whig-Standard. "And anyone who has observed the Frontenacs this season knows that the team has tremendous spirit and a great deal of pride. They want to end it against the team they have to beat."
* St. Louis rookie Alain (Boom Boom) Caron becomes the first player to reach 60 goals in a season in any level of professional hockey when he scores four times in a 7-1 win over the Sudbury Wolves. With the outburst, Caron surpasses the league record of 59 goals, set three years ago by Kingston's Orv Tessier.
Caron is scheduled to join the Chicago Black Hawks for the NHL playoffs after St. Louis, which failed to qualify for the post-season, concludes its schedule Sunday against Hull-Ottawa. "If he can get on the ice with Chicago, I wouldn't be surprised to see him score," St. Louis coach Gus Kyle said. "He can get his shot away faster than most forwards in the NHL now, and that's why he's scoring."
