Frontenacs 50th

Posted: March 31st, 2013 @ 10:47am

Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:

Fifty years ago today, Sunday, March 31, 1963

With a junior B goalie guarding the Kingston net and Cliff Pennington scoring four goals, the Kingston Frontenacs end their regular EPHL season with a 6-4 matinee win over the Sudbury Wolves at the Community Centre.

Kurt Demmler played in place of regular Kingston netminder Bruce Gamble, who suffered a groin injury in Saturday night's 2-2 tie with Hull-Ottawa. Demmler turned aside 38 shots in posting the win.

Taking a page from the playbook of the Canadiens, who scored after just 15 seconds Saturday night, Kingston's Wayne Connelly tapped home Wayne Schultz's rebound just 20 seconds into the game to open the scoring. Ron Willy scored Kingston's other goal as the Frontenacs ended the season in first place with league records for wins in a season (42), fewest losses (19) and points (94).

In Hull, meanwhile, the St. Louis Braves, who did not make the playoffs, spoiled Hull-Ottawa's final home game with a 3-1 win, a victory highlighted by Alain Caron's 61st goal of the season, a backhand flip that brought a standing ovation in the third period.

The Canadiens will finish their regular schedule tomorrow in Sudbury before embarking on a best-of-five semifinal series with the Wolves, starting Wednesday.
