Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:
Fifty years ago today, Monday, April 1, 1963
Gord Labossiere of the Sudbury Wolves is the scoring champion of the Eastern Professional Hockey League, after he scores three goals and adds two assists to lead his team to an 8-2 win over the Hull-Ottawa Canadiens in the final game of the regular schedule in Sudbury.
Labossiere finished the season with 101 points, two more than teammate Marc Dufour, who had two goals and an assist in the finale.
The semifinal preview was no contest. Sudbury led 7-0 before Hull-Ottawa's Bob Courcy scored midway through the third period. Rookie Brian Harper scored the Canadiens' other goal. Len Ronson, Dave McComb and Chick Balon scored single goals for Sudbury. The game was a wide-open affair, with Sudbury outshooting the visitors 47-37.
In the scoring race, Alain (Boom Boom) Caron and Murray Hall, both of St. Louis, each finished two points behind Dufour. Caron scored a league-record 61 goals though he didn't join the Braves until the season was 18 games old. Don Blackburn finishes as Kingston's top scorer with 96 points, good for fifth place. Phil Esposito of St. Louis was sixth with 90 points and Jeannot Gilbert of the Frontenacs, the only other player in the league with more than 80 points, finished seventh at 87.
* In order to keep busy during the first-round bye that came with finishing in first place, the Frontenacs are contemplating exhibition games with Clinton of the Eastern league, Neil McNeil of the Metro Junior A league or the Niagara Falls Flyers of the OHA. Or, Doug McConnell writes in the Whig-Standard, they may undertake a barnstorming tour of the east coast.
