Today in Kingston junior hockey playoff history

Posted: April 10th, 2013 @ 2:33pm

Today's installment in a daily feature that looks back at this date in Kingston junior hockey playoff history.

Sunday, April 10, 1977

Kingston Canadians gain a 4-4 tie before 9,969 fans at the Civic Centre to swing home-ice advantage in their semifinal series with the Ottawa 67's to their favour, but in the process they may have lost their leading scorer, Ken Linseman.

Linseman, with 20 points in nine playoff games, is given a match penalty by referee Blair Graham for kicking Jeff Geiger during a fight in the second period.

With five seconds on the clock, Bobby Smith appeared to have given Ottawa a win when he snared a loose puck at centre ice, faked defenceman Bob Parent to his knees, went around him and backhanded a shot over Canadians goaltender Rick Nickelchok. The buzzer sounded before Smith took his shot, however, and Graham quickly disallowed the goal.

Mike Crombeen, Mike Simurda and defenceman Moe Robinson had a goal and an assist apiece for Kingston, which got its other goal from defenceman Jay Wells. Crombeen's goal at 10:32 of the third period produced the tie, two minutes after Buddy Clouthier had given Ottawa a 4-3 lead. Ottawa led 2-1 after the first period and Kingston led 3-2 after the second.

The second-period brawl that led to Linseman's ejection, Art Wright wrote in the Whig-Standard, started "innocently enough" with Simurda "pounding Shane Pearsall to the ice."

"Ottawa's Ed Hospodar jumped Linseman from behind - Brian Crombeen then tackled Hospodar and Geiger joined the melee. Order appared to be restored at one point but then Geiger left the penalty box and he and Linseman exchanged blows in a fight, during which Graham ruled they kicked one another.

"Geiger was taken to hospital with a broken blood vessel in his forehead while Pearsall missed the remainder of the period getting his face stitched."
