Posted: April 12th, 2013 @ 3:39pm
Today's installment in a daily feature that looks back at this date in Kingston junior hockey playoff history.
Tuesday, April 12, 1977
Tony McKegney scores the first three goals of the game, in a span of seven minutes and 20 seconds, to spark the Kingston Canadians to a 6-4 win over the Ottawa 67's before a Memorial Centre crowd of 4,184. The victory gives Kingston a 5-3 lead in the eight-point Leyden division championship series.
The Canadians were already playing without the suspended Ken Linseman when Mike Crombeen suffered a knee injury three minutes into the game. The loss was a significant; the two players scored 93 goals between them in the regular season.
McKegney's goals and a shorthanded goal by Rob Plumb gave Kingston a 4-0 lead in the first period. Larry Elson, before the first period was over, and Ed Hospodar and Bobby Smith, with goals in the second period, lifted the visitors to within 4-3.
Lowell Loveday's goal in the third minute of the third period proved to be the winner. Mike Simurda scored with less than five minutes to play to restore the three-goal Kingston lead and Dave MacQueen ended scoring for Ottawa 23 seconds later.
