Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season.
Fifty years ago today, Monday, April 15, 1963
Kingston blanks Sudbury 4-0 to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven EPHL championship series. For the second game in a row Pat Stapleton scores the winning goal and excels on the blue line, while Bruce Gamble comes up with his best goaltending performance of the season, making 26 saves to record his third EPHL shutout.
Playing in Sudbury, the Whig-Standard reported the teams engaged in a typical playoff contest, featuring outstanding goaltending and strong defensive work. Stapleton's goal, with less than two minutes left in the first period, came on a 30-foot screened shot.
After a scoreless second period Dick Cherry scored in the sixth minute of the third. Jeannot Gilbert scored a minute later and Harry Sinden finished the Wolves with a goal at 17:12.
"Gamble kept the crowd of 3,700 in a constant uproar with his uncanny acrobatics in the Kingston net," Ron Brown wrote. "The line of Billy Knibbs, Jean-Paul Parise and Howie Dietrich checked Gord Labossiere's high-scoring line to a standstill."
