Queen's striker Jackie Tessier bound for FISU soccer tourney
Posted: April 18th, 2013 @ 11:16pm
Striker Jackie Tessier of the Queen's Golden Gaels has been named to Canada's women's soccer team for the Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia, July 6-17.
A three-time all-Canadian, Tessier has scored 47 goals in 58 games over her four-year career at Queen's. She was a member of Queen's national championship teams, 2010 and 2011, and she helped the Gaels win the silver medal at the CIS tournament in 2012.
Tessier said being named to the team was "an honour and a privilege."
"Considering the quality of players that were at the final tryouts, it was amazing just to play alongside those girls," she said in a release. "I can't wait to represent my country at the Games."
Queen's has been well represented at recent Student Games, by Brienna Shaw (2009, 2011), Riley Filion (2011) and Eilish McConville (2007).
The Canadian roster is dominated by 13 athletes from Canada West teams. There are six players from Ontario schools and one from Quebec.
Canada has never finished better than fifth at the FISU tournament, a place it attained in Shenzhen, China, in 2011 and Izmir, Turkey, in 2005. Related Articles:
