Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:
Fifty years ago today, Tuesday, Feb. 19, 1963
Four second-period goals give the Frontenacs a 4-2 win over the St. Louis Braves, lifting Kingston back into a tie for first place with idle Hull-Ottawa. Dick Cherry, a teacher at Rideau Heights Public School, scored for the Frontenacs, as did Cliff Pennington, Jeannot Gilbert and Ron Willy, who played "possibly his best game of the season," captain Harry Sinden told the Kingston Whig-Standard. Phil Esposito and Alain (Boom Boom) Caron scored for St. Louis, which couldn't capitalize on a 55-second two-man advantage early in the second period, at a time when they were leading the game 1-0.
