Today's installment in a daily feature that looks back at this date in Kingston junior hockey playoff history.
Tuesday, April 19, 1977
For the first time in the series, the Ottawa 67's dominate play - and, boy, do they ever! - as they pound the Kingston Canadians 9-0 in Ottawa. The Canadians, who managed only 20 shots on goal in the entire game, "played as if they were resigned to going back home for the eighth game (of the series)," Art Wright wrote in the Whig-Standard.
Ottawa outshot Kingston 19-1 in the first period and by the time the game was half over, the Canadians had managed just four shots on the Ottawa goal.
The 67's apparently responded to watching videotapes of the previous games of the series on Monday night. "Maybe some of the players hate my guts for it," Ottawa coach Brian Kilrea said, "but I think it was convincing. A coach can point out mistakes all night long but it sinks in more when a player sees himself making the mistakes on the screen."
The 67's scored three times in each period, and Jay O'Connor gained the shutout.
Rookie Dave MacQueen scored three times for Ottawa, while Bob Smith scored twice. Tim Higgins, Shane Pearsall, Steve Payne and defenceman Jim Kirkpatrick shared the others.
Kingston received a blow when Rob Plumb was given a match penalty for butt-ending. One of the keys to the Canadians' success in the playoffs with eight goals, Plumb will miss the series-deciding game tomorrow night with a suspension that automatically accompanies the match penalty.
