Kings gain 8-6 preseason win
Posted: April 27th, 2013 @ 9:09pm
OTTAWA - Haneh Brant scored four goals and goaltender Nic McFarlane gained his first win as a junior goaltender Saturday as the Kingston Kings defeated the Gloucester Griffins 8-6 in an exhibition junior C lacrosse game at Earl Armstrong Arena.
The teams will play the second half of the home-and-home preseason series Sunday afternoon at Centre 70. Game time is 4 o'clock.
The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the first period and 4-4 going into the third. Neither team scored two goals in a row through the first 53 minutes of the game, as five times Kingston took a one-goal lead only to have the Griffins come back to tie. The only time Gloucester enjoyed a lead, the Kings similarly answered less than three minutes later.
The teams were tied 6-6 going into the final seven minutes, when Brant took over. He scored his third goal of the game at 13:27 and added some insurance with another goal less than two minutes after that. For Brant, who scored his team's first two goals, it was the first four-goal game of his junior career. He also had an assist.
Josh Smith, the Queen's University student making his debut with the Kings, scored once and assisted on both of Brant's third-period goals. Cole Byvelds, a McGill University student who drove from Montreal for the game, Logan Rose and Zach Masterson scored Kingston's other goals.
For McFarlane, the team's No. 2 goaltender last year, today's game was his third junior start.
Nick Finlay, with two, Josh O'Connell, Caleb Grant, Josh Goodman and Tyler Traversy scored for Gloucester. O'Connell had three assists.
Kingston converted four of five power-play opportunities, while killing five of seven man-short situations.
Sunday's game will conclude the exhibition portion of the Kings' schedule. Admission will be free, though the Kings will collect donations for the Partners in Mission Food Bank. Related Articles:
