Regi gains berth in EOSSA girls volleyball

Representing the only high schools in the Kingston area running varsity sports programs, the Holy Cross Crusaders and Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers crossed paths on the volleyball court many times this year. In doing so, the Panthers became eminently familiar with their cross-town rivals.
"The way the schedule has gone, we would be disappointed if we weren't playing for the EOSSA qualifier tomorrow," said Regi coach Mark McKenna.
They weren't disappointed.
The Panthers were in control throughout the match, sweeping Holy Cross 3-0 to claim a berth in Wednesday's eastern Ontario championship against Thousand Islands of Brockville.
That match will commence at 1:30 in the main Regi gym.
Without a regular Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association schedule to contest, McKenna said the season has been different and difficult.
"As far as the total number of games, that hasn't changed," said McKenna, filling in Tuesday for the Panthers' regular coach, Pat Farrell, who is out of the country.
The Panthers have been to four tournaments, and McKenna said being exposed to teams of different calibre that play different styles can only help a team with OFSAA aspirations.
"Absolutely," he said. "We've seen some different teams, different competition. We've seen some really good teams, which is what you need to do, going forward.
"They've been through enough games to know how to adapt to whatever they encounter."
Regi will be going to EOSSA for the second time in three years, and they earned that right Tuesday largely on the strength of consistent serving, McKenna said.
"We served really well. As long as they're keeping it low to the tape and it's going over it put (the Crusaders) in a lot of difficulty, took them out of their offence.
"We didn't have to pound it, just keep it nice and low and flat, and it took their timing away."
