Nine more recruits commit to football Gaels

Posted: May 26th, 2013 @ 8:36pm

A quarterback, two players from the Maritimes and an ex-pat Kingstonian are among the latest group of incoming football freshmen announced by the Queen's Golden Gaels.

Chris Sharanewych, a quarterback from Etobicoke Richview, was among nine players introduced by Gaels coach Pat Sheahan at a news conference Friday. The group brings to 23 the number of recruits who have formally committed to play at Queen's.

The Gaels looked east for two of the other players, Alex Bayne, a wide receiver from Bedford, N.S., and James Pelley, an offensive lineman from Fall River, N.S. Both players were members of the Nova Scotia team at the Canada Cup tournament.

Mackenzie George, a 6-foot-3, 315-pound offensive lineman from Kingston, will be coming home to play university football after attending Trinity College School in Port Hope.

The other newest members of the Gaels are linebackers Christopher Fabilli, from Sudbury, and Austin Passareillo, from Oakville; defensive back Aaron Beltri of Burlington and wide receivers Connor Weir of Waterloo and Alex Zulys of Toronto.

The newcomers will report to their first training camp in mid-August. The Gaels will open their Ontario University Athletics schedule Sunday, Aug. 25, when they visit the York Lions.
