Frontenacs 50th

Posted: February 20th, 2013 @ 12:55pm

Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:

Fifty years ago today, Wednesday, Feb. 20, 1963

Striking arena workers in Sudbury force cancellation of tonight's game between the Wolves and Hull-Ottawa Canadiens. Fans of late have had to cross a picket line of the International Union of Operating Engineers to get into games at the Sudbury Memorial Centre and many in the staunchly union town have chosen not to do so.

The future of the Sudbury hockey club and the Eastern Professional Hockey League could well be decided Friday, when a Toronto court will rule on the pickets. League governors spent five hours behind closed doors in Ottawa Tuesday discussing the situation.

The Frontenacs are scheduled to play in Sudbury on Friday.

* Meanwhile, in New York, former Frontenac Bob Leiter scored in the third period to lift the Boston Bruins into a 3-3 tie with the Rangers. A fan favourite in Kingston the previous year, Leiter was leading the EPHL in scoring with 15 goals and 38 points in Kingston's first 20 games before he earned promotion to the NHL.
