Grenadiers win one of three games to open Ontario Varsity Football League season
Posted: May 26th, 2013 @ 8:58pm
Kingston Grenadiers suffered an Ontario Varsity Football League junior varsity defeat that was devastating on two counts Saturday afternoon.
Two touchdowns in the final two minutes of the game doomed the Grenadiers to a 39-35 defeat at the hands of the Newmarket Bucs. Then, after the game, the Grenadiers learned that running back Brodie Latimer, after rushing for 85 of Kingston's 107 yards on the ground, will be lost for the season after breaking his leg late in the ball game.
Latimer, a student at Sydenham High School, was fresh from winning the junior sprint hurdles Friday at the Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association track and field championships in Brockville.
Drew Holmes caught five passes for 34 yards and two touchdowns for the Grenadiers, who were playing their first game of the season. Devin Leblanc had three catches for 88 yards and a touchdown while Liam Smith caught four balls for 77 yards.
In all, quarterback Tanner DeJong completed 21 of 33 attempts for 274 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions.
In the other games of Saturday's tripleheader at Loyalist Collegiate, the varsity Grenadiers posted a 27-0 win over Newmarket, while the bantam Grenadiers were beaten 37-0 by the visiting Bucs.
In the varsity game, Kingston spent most of the first half in the opponent's end but could not complete a drive for a major score, leading just 5-0 at halftime. The Grenadiers scored 22 unanswered points in the second half to nail down the win, with Kalen Van Camp, Andrew Braby and Jonathan Brunner each catching a touchdown pass.
Dylan Bell saw most of the duty at quarterback, completing seven of 16 attempts for 56 yards and two touchdowns. Jeremy Pendergast threw for the other TD. Dustin Brogaard carried 12 times for 73 yards to lead a 160-yard rushing attack.
Nick Dowd, bound to play this fall at Queen's University, had a sack and an interception for the Grenadiers.
In the bantam game, the Grenadiers found themselves trailing 13-0 before they even had possession of the football and they never recovered. Kingston failed to complete a pass and rushed for just 84 yards from 19 carries.
All three Kingston teams will be on the road this Saturday to face the Toronto Thunder at Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough. Related Articles:
