Varsity Grenadiers win second straight

Kingston Grenadiers won their second Ontario Varsity Football League varsity game Saturday in Don Mills, but they paid dearly for their 18-0 victory over the Toronto Thunder.
The undefeated Grenadiers lost running back Cole Goodfellow and quarterback Dylan Bell to injury in the first half of the game at George Vanier Secondary School. Bell completed four of nine passes but he also threw three interceptions in the rain-soaked affair before he was forced out of the game with what the team is describing an upper-body injury. He also finished the game as the team's leading rusher, with 73 yards.
His replacement, Dylan Fisher, completed three of four passes and scored a touchdown on a one-yard run.
Before injuring an ankle, Goodfellow had rushed for 24 yards and scored the only touchdown of the first half. Dustin Brogaard carried 14 times for Kingston in the second half, for 53 yards.
Mike Bashall converted both Kingston touchdowns and booted a 28-yard field goal and a single.
A splendid performance by Caleb Goodfellow couldn't prevent the junior varsity Grenadiers from being defeated 28-20 by the Thunder. Goodfellow rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown and he caught three passes, including one for a 72-yard touchdown.
Tanner DeJong and Colin Walker combined to pass for 202 yards, and neither one threw an interception. Eight different Grenadiers had receptions, including Drew Holmes, who caught five, and Liam Smith, who caught four.
One of Holmes' catches was a three-yard TD toss from DeJong.
Like the junior Grenadiers, the bantam team is still looking for its first win, after absorbing a 47-6 setback. Quarterback Drew Freake threw for 182 yards, completing 10 of 25 attempts, but the G-Men couldn't get going on the ground, managing just 25 yards rushing on 21 carries.
Riley Truesdell had four receptions and Drew Samis three for the Grenadiers.
All three teams will travel to Pickering for their next game, Saturday against the Dolphins.
