Varsity Grenadiers extend unbeaten streak to three games

Posted: June 9th, 2013 @ 9:25pm

Kingston Grenadiers surrendered - literally - their first points of the season but they remain undefeated in varsity play after a 14-2 win over the Pickering Dolphins Saturday night in Pickering.

In three Ontario Varsity Football League games the Grenadiers defence has yet to allow a point. It was never better than in the second quarter of Saturday's contest, when Aaron Brownlee led a host of Kingston tacklers who denied a Pickering gamble on fourth-and-goal from the two-yard line to preserve a slender 4-0 lead.

Brownlee later intercepted a fourth-quarter pass in the end zone to keep the perfect defensive record intact.

The Grenadiers got their only touchdown in the second half, when quarterback Dylan Fisher completed a 30-yard scoring pass with Nate Kellar down the middle of the field. Mike Bashall completed the Kingston scoring with field goals of 33 and 29 yards, two converts and a single on a failed 28-yard field goal attempt.

Pickering's only points came on a second-half safety touch, as the Dolphins fell to 0-2.

Dustin Brogaard carried the football 18 times for Kingston but managed just 47 yards against a stubborn Pickering defence. After throwing three interceptions in the first half, Fisher settled nicely and finished with nine completions in 21 attempts for 142 yards. Kellar was the favourite target, with five catches for 89 yards.

The junior varsity Grenadiers are still winless after three games after they were defeated 24-14 Saturday in Pickering by the undefeated (3-0) Dolphins. Grenadiers quarterback Tanner Dejong completed 11 of 21 passes for 48 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown pass to Nicholas Westendorp. Drew Holmes had four catches for the Grenadiers, who scored more points than Pickering's two previous two opponents combined

In bantam play, Pickering gained its first win of the year, 27-7 over the Grenadiers, who are now 0-3 with a league-worst 13 points scored.

All three Kingston teams will resume play Saturday against the Oshawa Hawkeyes at Loyalist Collegiate. The bantams will seek their first win against an opponent that is also winless at 11 a.m.; the junior varsity game at 1 p.m. will also be a match of winless clubs, while the varsity Grenadiers will put their undefeated record on the line against a Hawkeyes team that is 2-1.
