Owen Klassen helps Canada sweep Four Nations basketball tournament

Posted: June 19th, 2013 @ 12:35pm

Kingston's Owen Klassen was a double-digit scorer in three of Canada's nine games as they emerged undefeated from the Four Nations Invitational men's basketball tournament in China. The three-city, 11-day event ended Tuesday.

Coached by senior men's national team coach Jay Triano, with Carleton Ravens coach Dave Smart of Napanee on his staff, the Canadian development team played three games against each of the other three teams in the tournament, China, the U.S. and Latvia. For the Canadians, it was the final competitive tuneup before the World Student Games, beginning July 7 in Kazan, Russia.

Klassen, the Bayridge Secondary School grad who helped Acadia to a fourth-place finish in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship in March, had 10 points and 10 rebounds in the third game of the tournament, an 82-40 win over Latvia in Kaixian.

He followed that with a 13-point performance in an 81-62 victory over China in Huaihua. In the tournament finale, Klassen again reached double figures in scoring as Canada whipped Latvia 93-38 in Wuqi.
