Kings suffer bitter defeat

A goal by Riley Campbell in the final second of a 10-minute overtime period gave the visiting Peterborough Lakers a 12-11 victory over the Kingston Kings Thursday night in an Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League game at Centre 70.
The defeat was heartbreaking for the Kings, who trailed 6-2 at the end of the first period and 9-4 with less than eight minutes to play in the second but came all the way back when Alec Johnston scored with 6.4 seconds left in the third period to tie the game 11-11.
The overtime had been scoreless, though the Kings played the first three and a half minutes of it on the power play, and Kingston had possession of the ball in the dying moments of overtime when the ball came loose and Peterborough's Cole McWilliams came up with it. He sent Campbell off on a breakaway and he outran two pursuing Kings to put a high shot over the shoulder of Kings goaltender David Joseph with less than a second on the clock.
The outcome spoiled two splendid comebacks by the Kings. The first came in the final five minutes of the second period, when they scored three times to narrow a five-goal deficit to 9-7 going into the third. The second came in the final six minutes of the third period, after the Lakers had scored to take an 11-8 lead. Goals by Jake Evoy and Johnston 78 seconds apart cut the gap to 11-10.
In the final minute the Lakers, playing shorthanded, were in the process of killing the clock when Johnston and Cole Byvelds combined to jar the ball free. After gaining possession, the Kings called timeout with 20 seconds to play and on the ensuing trip up the floor Johnston snagged a rebound at the right tip and put it behind Lakers goaltender Brandon Wilson.
The Kings, who played a superb defensive game in the third period - allowing the Lakers just two goals - had some fine scoring opportunities in overtime, outshooting the Lakers 9-7. Joseph made some fine saves in the Kingston net to keep the game tied.
Kyle Aylesworth had a career game for the Kings, with four goals and five assists, giving him 22 goals and 39 points in 11 games this season. It was the best single-game performance by a Kingston junior since Tim Bergin's 10-point effort in a 14-12 loss at Clarington June 26, 2009.
Johnston finished with three goals and three assists and Haneh Brant had a goal and four assists. Evoy, Josh Smith and Kaleb Bingley scored the other Kingston goals.
The Lakers, who brought just 14 runners to the game, played without two of their top three scorers, Mike Cavanagh and the suspended Nick Andreoli. They did have McWilliams, however, and that's always problematic for Kingston. McWilliams led Peterborough with three goals and five assists, and after eight games he has five of his six goals and 12 of his 17 points in two games against the Kings.
Darien Jacobs had three goals and four assists and Brandon Johnson had two goals and four assists for the Lakers. Chris Clancy, with two goals and three assists, Parker Sands and Campbell also scored for Peterborough, who improved to 5-2-1, to move two points ahead of Kingston and Whitby into sole possession of third place in the East division.
Kingston, which fell to 4-6-1, will resume play Tuesday in Brockville before returning home next Thursday to host the Cornwall Celtics.
