Aaron Nusbaum of Queen's helps Canada to silver medal at world u-21 beach volleyball
Posted: June 24th, 2013 @ 7:43pm
Queen's University varsity volleyball player Aaron Nusbaum teamed with Grant O'Gorman to give Canada the silver medal at the world under-21 beach volleyball championship in Umag, Crotia, Sunday.
The Canadians were defeated 2-0 (21-12, 23-21) by Brazil in the gold-medal match of the three-day tournament. O'Gorman and Nusbaum came back to tie the second set at 19-19 and they fought off two match points before finally succumbing.
Canada beat Russian 2-0 (21-11, 21-15) in the semifinals, while Brazil ousted Poland, also 2-0. The second-place performance is a step up for Canada, which finished third at the world under-19 championship in 2011.
Nusbaum, who will begin his third season with the Gaels in the fall, delivered the decisive point in the win over Russia.
"We just focused on our contacts, sticking to our game plan, serving tough along with that, and executing the opportunities," Nusbaum said in a release. "I think we had a slight advantage in this heat being smaller guys. We don't get as tired as these bigger guys do."
O'Gorman, a student at York University, will be back on the dunes with Queen's grad Sam Pedlow, a five-year Gael, representing Canada at the World Student Games in Kazan, Russia, July 6-17.
