Josh Smith enjoys record-setting night as Kings defeat Gloucester

OTTAWA - Josh Smith tied one all-time team record and he established another for the modern era of junior lacrosse in Kingston Wednesday night, when he scored seven goals to lead the Kingston Kings to a 17-10 Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League win over the Gloucester Griffins at the Brian Kilrea Arena.
Smith's seven goals tied the all-time single-game record achieved twice before: by Barrie Franklin, July 1, 1973, in a 41-10 win over Morrisburg, and matched by Norm Williamson, May 20, 1974, in a 21-12 loss at Nepean. The performance established a modern (since the club was re-established in 2009) team record for goals in a game, one more than the six Tim Bergin scored May 26, 2009 in a 14-12 loss at Claringon.
Smith, an engineering student at Queen's University from Sutton, Ont., who played last year for Innisfil, had three assists Wednesday, for a 10-point performance that matched the 10 points Bergin collected in that game four years ago to set the modern standard for points in a game.
It was just the sixth double-digit performance in Kingston junior lacrosse history. Bryan Alexander holds the team record, 13 points (two goals and 11 assists) in a 25-20 win over St. Regis, July 27, 1975.
Wednesday's contest was also a milestone game for teammate Kyle Aylesworth, who had four goals and four assists. The eight points give him 57 for the season and allowed him to move into sixth place among the team's all-time leading scorers. With 141 points in four seasons, Aylesworth last night passed Dan Wilson (135) and Hugh McDermid (138), two Kingston stalwarts of the mid-seventies.
The Kings led 5-2 after the first period Wednesday and turned the game into a rout with six straight goals - three of them by Smith - in the first seven minutes of the second period.
Alec Johnston, with two, Stuart Johnston, with his first junior goal, Jonah Lewis, Caleb Bingley and Jake Evoy scored the other Kingston goals. Evoy had four assists and he had a point in four of Kingston's first eight goals.
Fred Hartley had four goals and three assists for Gloucester, which concluded its regular schedule without a win. Tyler Collins, Josh O'Connell, Tye Simard, Caleb Grant, Zack O'Gorman and David Plots shared the other Griffins goals.
The win was the second of four puzzle pieces that must fall in place this week for the Kings to finish fourth and enjoy home-floor advantage in the first round of playoffs against Whitby. The first was Whitby's 9-2 loss to Peterborough Tuesday night. With this win, Kingston improves to 6-8-1 and moves into a fourth-place tie with the Warriors.
The third piece of the puzzle happens Thursday night, when the Kings host the Brockville Ballistic in the final game of the regular year for both teams. A win would put Kingston two points ahead of Whitby, which would then have to win Friday night in Peterborough against the third-place Lakers to restore the tie.
If the teams end the schedule in a tie the Warriors would be favoured for their 2-0 record versus Kingston in the regular season.
Tonight's 8 o'clock game at Centre 70 will feature three of the top four goal scorers in the league: Brockville's Jarret Pitt will enter the game with a league-leading 34 goals, Aylesworth has 32 and Smith, who has 13 goals in his last three games, now has 31. Hamilton's Adam Charalambides also has 32 goals, and all four players have one game remaining to play.
