Kings win second in a row; move into fourth place
Posted: July 12th, 2013 @ 1:02am
Kingston Kings have done what they could in the final week of the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League season to secure fourth place. Now they must wait to see if they can keep it.
The Kings ended their regular schedule with an 6-3 win over the Brockville Ballistic Thursday night at Centre 70. The win moves Kingston, 7-8-1, two points ahead of idle Whitby in the quest to finish fourth and have home-floor advantage in the best-of-five quarter final that begins next week.
Whitby concludes its regular schedule Friday night in Peterborough. If the Warriors lose or tie, the Kings will finish fourth. If Whitby wins and creates a tie, the Warriors will be favoured on the basis of having won both regular-season games with Kingston.
Kingston's win Thursday was the second in as many days, as the Kings won back-to-back games for the first time since May 23-28. They did it in fine style, outshooting the visitors 68-28. Only the fine goaltending of Brockville's Colin Halladay kept the game close.
The teams played a rare scoreless first period, then Kingston went to work in the second, with goals by Josh Smith and Bryce Drew 58 seconds apart in the game's 27th minute putting the home side ahead 2-0. It was 3-0 when former King Jay Waller scored Brockville's first goal at 19:02 but the late goal gave the Ballistic no boost, since Cole Byvelds replied for Kingston before the period ended to restore the three-goal cushion.
Brockville twice drew to within two goals in the third period but the Ballistic could get no closer as each time the Kings answered with a goal of their own within a few minutes.
Zach Masterson, with two, and Ba Maracle scored the other goals for Kingston while Alec Johnston had three assists. Devin Primeau and Cory Robertson also scored for Brockville, which finished the season in sixth place at 4-11-1.
In a significant reversal of fortune, with three wins and a tie, Kingston was unbeaten this year against the Ballistic. Last year Brockville was 7-0 against the Kings, including a three-game sweep in the first round of playoffs. Related Articles:
