Queen's rowers fifth at world under-23 championships

Rowers from Queen's University were part of two Canadian crews that finished fifth at the world under-23 rowing championships, a five-day regatta in Linz-Ottensheim, Austria, that concluded Sunday.
Meghan Robinson, a Queen's athlete from Bowen Island, B.C., was part of the Canadian women's eight that finished fifth in Sunday's final. The U.S. won the event in six minutes 16.81 seconds, followed by Great Britain and Germany. Canada was 14 seconds off the pace, in 6:30.56.
On Saturday, Queen's coxswain Jacob Koudys of Fonthill, Ont., was in the Canadian men's coxed four that finished fifth in the final, behind Italy, New Zealand, Germany and Australia. Canada finished the race in six minutes 31.9 seconds, also a little more than 14 seconds behind the winners.
Both crews were unable to qualify directly from their heat to the final, and each ultimately did so by finishing second in their respective repechage.
They were two of the best performances by Canadians at the championships. The only Canadian medal winner was Carling Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont., who won the silver medal Sunday in the women's single.
Queen's rower Matt Christie of Kingston was fifth Saturday in the C final of the lightweight men's single, leaving him 17th overall. After finishing fifth in his heat, Christie won the repechage to advance to the quarter-finals.
