Two medals for Kingston athletes at Canada Summer Games

Posted: August 5th, 2013 @ 9:12pm

Cassidy Tran of Kingston won a gold medal in the University of Sherbrooke pool Monday night at the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que.

Tran topped the field in the A final of women's Special Olympics 50-metre breaststroke. She had the fastest time in qualifying, 51.15 seconds, and she won the final in 51.36 seconds, 34 one-hundredths of a second faster than Amelie Plouffe of Quebec.

Tran's medal was the second won by a Kingston's athlete on the third day of the Games. Monday morning Evan McNeely won a silver medal as a member of Ontario's mountain bike relay team.

McNeely, riding with Mitchell Bailey of Barrie and Steven Noble of Mulmur, finished the course at Mont Bellevue in 54 minutes 49.90 seconds, about 53 seconds behind the winning team from Quebec and more than three minutes ahead of bronze medal-winning British Columbia.

Ontario's women's volleyball team, which includes Brett Hagarty and Niki Slikboer of the Queen's Golden Gaels, lost both of its games Monday. Undefeated through the first two days of the tournament, Ontario was edged 3-2 by Alberta and defeated 3-0 by B.C.

The Albertans prevailed in a gruelling match Monday morning, 25-20, 15-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-6, with Slikboer contributing two kills and four assists. Against B.C., Ontario lost 25-17, 25-21, 25-20.

B.C. finished the preliminary round with a 5-0 record. Alberta was second at 4-1 and Ontario third at 3-2. Ontario will play either Quebec or Manitoba in a sudden-death quarter-final Tuesday night.
