Cornwall captures East division lacrosse title

Posted: August 7th, 2013 @ 1:31am

Cornwall Celtics are going to the Meredith Cup championship tournament as East division champions, after they swept the Clarington Shamrox out of the best-of-five division final in three straight games.

For Cornwall, it's the third divisition title in a row.

The Celtics scored four unanswered goals in the third period to claim a 9-5 win in Game 3 Sunday in Clarington. Liam Vipond assisted on three of those goals as Cornwall won its second game in as many days on the road. Brock Daze and Matt Bourassa scored three goals apiece for the Celtics, who will be hosting the four-team league championship Aug. 16-18.

With Cornwall automatically entered as tournament host, Clarington, three-time defending league champion, had already qualified as well as the East division finalist. The other two competing teams will be the two West division finalists, the Caledon Bandits and Hamilton Bengals. Hamilton leads that best-of-five series 2-1.
