Queen's soccer women open with victory
Posted: September 1st, 2013 @ 12:50am
Two players who came the farthest to play for the Queen's Golden Gaels played pivotal roles in the team's shortest road trip Saturday night, as the Gaels edged the Royal Military College Paladins 1-0 on the Navy Bay field in the opening game of the Ontario University Athletics women's soccer season for both teams.
Rookie striker Tara Bartram of Vancouver needed just 20 minutes to score the first goal of her intercollegiate career and the flawless goalkeeping of Madison Tyrell of White Rock, B.C., made it stand up for the victory.
Tyrell faced six RMC shots as the Gaels, 2012 national silver medalists, took 11 shots on Paladins goalie Morgan Hartlen, a second-year cadet from Halifax who was making her second intercollegiate start.
The Gaels will resume play Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. when they host the Carleton Ravens on the upper west campus field. Carleton opened its season Saturday with a 2-0 win over the Toronto Blues.
Also Wednesday, RMC will host the defending OUA champion Ottawa Gee-Gees at 7 p.m. Ottawa defeated Ryerson 2-0 in its first game Saturday in Toronto. Related Articles:
