Canadians advance to playoff round at FIBA Americas tournament
Posted: September 4th, 2013 @ 10:23am
Aaron Doornekamp had a three-point basket Tuesday night as Canada defeated Uruguay 93-67 in the FIBA Americas basketball tournament in Caracas, Venezuela.
It was Canada's third victory in the four-game preliminary round-robin at the 10-team tournament, from where the four semifinalists will qualify for next summer's World Cup in Spain.
In 21 minutes on the floor, Doornekamp, the Ernestown Secondary School grad who had a fine intercollegiate career at Carleton, also had three rebounds and four assists.
Canada led 29-11 after the end of the first quarter and quickly scored two three-point baskets to open the second quarter en route to building a 26-point halftime lead.
Andrew Nicholson, 7-for-8 from the floor - including 3-for-3 from three-point range - led Canada with 18 points while Cory Joseph had 17 points and seven assists.
The top four teams from each of the five-team pools will advance into a playoff round in which they will play each of the surviving four teams from the other pool. Canada will resume play Thursday against Mexico, which finished 3-1 in Pool B. Related Articles:
