Queen's soccer women gain second straight win
Posted: September 4th, 2013 @ 11:41pm
Queen's Golden Gaels managed to get just one shot on the Carleton Ravens' net Wednesday night but rookie striker Tara Bartram made it count as the Gaels defeated the visiting Ravens 1-0 in an Ontario University Athletics women's soccer game on the upper west campus field.
Bartram broke a scoreless deadlock in the game's 75th minute, scoring on a shot from six yards out off a corner kick. Goaltender Madison Tyrell made it good for the victory with four saves in the first half and three more in the second.
The win was the second without defeat for the No. 2-ranked Gaels, who have won both games 1-0 with Bartram scoring the goal in each and Tyrell posting both shutouts.
In a men's game Wednesday night, No. 4-ranked Carleton spoiled the Gaels' season opener, scoring a goal in each half of a 2-0 win over seventh-ranked Queen's.
Carleton's Joey Kewin opened scoring in the 38th minute with an off-balance 25-yard shot. A long throw-in led to a goal by Andrew Latty 10 minutes into the second half. Ravens goalkeeper Callum Ayre had just to stop one Queen's shot to record the shutout.
The Queen's women will be on the road for two weekend games, Saturday in Ottawa against the No. 4-ranked Gee-Gees and Sunday at winless Trent. The men also travel to Peterborough for a Sunday date with the Excalibur.
