Canada beats Mexico to open second round at FIBA Americas tournament

Posted: September 6th, 2013 @ 12:11am

Canada got 21 points from Brady Heslip and 19 more from Andrew Rautins Thursday in an 89-67 win over Mexico in the opening game of the second round at the FIBA Americas basketball tournament in Caracas, Venezuela.

Canada is 3-1 at the 10-team event - a victory over Brazil in the first round has been discarded since the Brazilians failed to advance - and the Canadians resume play Friday against the host Venezuelans, who are 2-2.

Odessa's Aaron Doornekamp started for Canada but he did not score in 18 minutes of playing time. He had two rebounds, an assist and four fouls.

Heslip scored three straight three-point baskets in the third quarter to help keep Canada ahead, 60-58, going into the fourth quarter. The final period began with a 13-2 Canadian run that secured the lead for good.

Canada had 16 three-point baskets - to five from Mexico - and the Canadian bench players outscored the Mexican reserves 33-2.

The four semifinalists at this tournament will qualify for next summer's World Cup in Spain.
