Canada in tough situation at FIBA Americas tournament after loss to Dominican Republic

Canada fell to 3-3 Saturday at the FIBA Americas men's basketball tournament in Caracas, Venezuela, when it suffered an 81-74 defeat at the hands of the Dominican Republic.
Aaron Doornekamp, an Ernestown Secondary School grad from Odessa, started for Canada but he did not score in 34 minutes of playing time, missing his only shot, from beyond the three-point arc. His six rebounds tied for the team best and he had four fouls.
The Canadians took a 28-18 lead in the first quarter but they trailed 45-44 at halftime and 59-57 going into the final period. A basket by Cory Joseph with 1:18 to play drew Canada to within 76-72 going into the final minute, but James Feldeine hit a three-point shot 20 seconds later to put the DR up by seven.
Andrew Nicholson led all scorers with 29 points in the losing cause.
Going into the final day of the preliminary round, Canada finds itself in a three-way tie for the fourth and final semifinal berth with Argentina and Venezuela. The Canadians, five-point losers to Venezuela Friday night, will conclude their schedule Sunday against Argentina.
Argentina beat Venezuela by six points in the first round. The Venezuelans finish their schedule Sunday against 1-5 Jamaica.
The Dominican Republic is tied for second place with Mexico. Puerto Rico sits atop the standings of the eight-team bracket at 5-1, having suffered its only loss Friday to the DR.
The top four teams at this tournament will qualify for the World Cup next summer in Spain.
