Canada eliminated at FIBA Americas tournament
Posted: September 8th, 2013 @ 8:26pm
Canada bowed from medal contention at the FIBA Americas men's basketball tournament when they dropped a 73-67 decision to Argentina Sunday on the final day of the second round of the 12-team competition in Caracas, Venezuela.
It was the third straight loss for Canada, which as a result missed qualifying for the semifinals and, therefore, will not play next summer in the World Cup tournament in Spain.
The Canadians appeared to be in good shape as they brought a 2-1 record out of the preliminary round and won their first game in the second round over Mexico. Then followed losses to Venezuela and the Dominican Republic Friday and Saturday that left them in a three-way tie for the fourth and final semifinal berth entering play Sunday.
Argentina, meanwhile, won its last two games to earn the right to advance.
Canada led 18-13 after the first quarter and 36-32 at halftime but after surrendering 29 points in the third quarter trailed by five points, 61-56 going into the fourth. Canada led by as many as seven points in the third quarter but fell behind when the Argentinians put together a 10-0 run at the end of the period.
The teams combined to score just 23 points in the fourth quarter. The Canadians closed to within three points, 66-63, with six minutes to play but managed to score just four more points the rest of the way.
Odessa's Aaron Doornekamp started and played 34 minutes for Canada. He scored two points but had three assists, three steals and nine rebounds, including a team-best eight off the defensive glass.
Cory Joseph led Canada with 19 points. Related Articles:
