Western pounds Ottawa; improves to 4-0

Posted: September 15th, 2013 @ 12:00am

Western Mustangs got six rushing touchdowns from five different players Saturday afternoon as they hammered the visiting Ottawa Gee-Gees 83-27 in an Ontario University Athletics football game.

The Mustangs, who have scored 262 points in compiling their perfect 4-0 record - 65.5 points per game - had 40 first downs on the way to gaining 743 total yards over the Gee-Gees, who fell to 2-2 despite a 491-yard offensive day of their own.

Ottawa closed to within 20-17 when Andrew Mullings scored the first of his two touchdowns, on a four-yard pass from Aaron Colbon, in the first minute of the second quarter. Western led by 14 points going into the last minute of the first half, but a touchdown and a field goal in the final 43 seconds sent the Mustangs into the break with a 44-20 lead.

Garret Sanvido's 64-yard touchdown run in the second minute of the second half was the killer, boosting the advantage to 51-20.

Will Finch completed 18 of 26 passes for 297 yards for Western, with three touchdown completions to Brian Marshall. Colbon was 24-for-36 for Ottawa, for 328 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Sanvido finished the day with 180 yards rushing from 12 carries. He scored two touchdowns. Ian Stewart had eight catches for 148 yards for Ottawa.

Bayridge Secondary School grad and former Kingston Grenadier Lewis Ward kicked three converts and field goals of 36 and 27 yards for the Gee-Gees.

Elsewhere Saturday, the Guelph Gryphons remained undefeated with a 38-12 win over the Toronto Blues; the Windsor Lancers defeated the Carleton Ravens 44-14, McMaster ended a two-game losing streak with a 41-27 win over the York Lions and the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks gained their first win of the season, 41-10 over the Waterloo Warriors.

Playing in Toronto, Gryphons quarterback Jazz Lindsey was 21-of-34 for 297 yards and four touchdowns, two of them to his older brother, Saxon. Saxon Lindsey finished the game with nine catches for 108 yards.

Three Toronto quarterbacks were 16-for-32 but they also combined to throw four interceptions. The Varsity Blues also fumbled twice. They got their only touchdown with 1:42 left in the fourth quarter, when Kevin Bradfield returned a punt 97 yards.

Toronto's Aaron Milton was the game's leading rusher, with 90 yards gained on the ground. Dan Ferraro kicked his season-long 47-yard field goal for the Gryphons.

At Windsor, Austin Kennedy completed 26 of 33 passes - to 11 different receivers - for 344 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. The Lancers quarterback also scored a touchdown amid his 49 yards rushing. Dylan Whitfield had two TD catches for Windsor, which tallied 578 yards of offence though, oddly, the longest of its five scoring plays was just 12 yards and there was just one gain of more than 25.

Windsor led 33-0 before Carleton scored with two and a half minutes left in the third quarter. Kyle Van Wynsberghe led the Ravens with eight catches for 108 yards.

York gave the Marauders all they could handle in the first half of the game in Hamilton, where the teams were tied 10-10 until McMaster quarterback Marshall Ferguson found Daniel Vandervoort for a 10-yard touchdown pass with 23 seconds to play in the half. The two then connected again, for a 40-yard TD, in the sixth minute of the third quarter, for a 24-10 lead that the visiting Lions couldn't catch.

Ferguson was 23-for-34 for 269 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. One of those scoring throws was to his former Frontenac Secondary School teammate, Ben O'Connor, a 44-yard play midway through the fourth quarter. O'Connor finished the game with three catches for 67 yards.

On a day when total offence would favour McMaster just 463-454, Kasean Davis-Reynolds had a season-best 123 yards rushing for the Marauders, while Errol Brooks rushed for 197 yards for York, the most in a game in the league this year.

Saturday night at Waterloo, James Fracas made his first start of the season at quarterback for Laurier and he helped the Hawks to their first victory in four tries. The grandson of Canadian Football Hall of Famer Gino Fracas, he completed 15 of 26 passes for 170 yards.

Dillon Campbell rushed for a career-best 180 yards, scoring two touchdowns for Laurier, which benefited from three Waterloo fumbles and two interceptions as Michael Faulds got his first career win as an intercollegiate head coach.

The Hawks led 31-3 before the Warriors scored their touchdown 3:20 into the fourth quarter.

Next week: York, 1-2, will visit Carleton, 0-3; Western, 4-0, will play at Laurier, 1-3; McMaster, 2-2, will try and spoil Guelph's unblemished 3-0 record; Queen's, 3-0, comes off its bye week to travel to Ottawa, 2-2; and Windsor, 2-2, entertains Toronto, 1-3. Waterloo will have the week off.

In Montreal, the St. Francis Xavier X-Men won their second game in a row, twice coming from behind to defeat the Concordia Stingers 35-18. The X-Men trailed 18-16 midway through the third quarter before they ended the game by scoring 19 straight points.

Quarterback Clay Masikewich threw fourth-quarter touchdown passes of 50 and 85 yards to Jordan Catterall to secure the win, which surpasses the total the X-Men gained on the field in 2012. St. F.X. was 1-7 last year but gained a win when Concordia admitted to using an ineligible player.

Sydenham High School grad Hayden Peters punted 12 times for the X-Men, to an average of 40 yards per punt. He landed four of them inside the Stingers' 20-yard line. Peters also had seven solo tackles from his safety position, second most in the game.

Kingston's Max Caron had four tackles for Concordia, one of them behind the St. F.X. line of scrimmage.
