Third-quarter run propels La Salle to senior basketball win

Posted: September 20th, 2013 @ 12:24am

La Salle Black Knights scored 13 of the first 14 points in the second half of their senior girls basketball game Thursday and they went on to defeat the Sydenham Golden Eagles 35-20 in the opening game of the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association season for both teams.

La Salle emerged from a sloppily played first half at Sydenham with an 18-10 lead, which became a 31-11 advantage after the third-quarter run.

Lillie Dixon led La Salle with 10 points, while Jamie Mumby scored seven. Erin Villeneuve scored eight points for the home team.

In other games, Bridget Way-Brackenbury scored 16 points as the Loyalist Lancers gained their second straight win of the young season, 47-23 over the Granite Ridge Gryphons, and the visiting Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers also improved to 2-0 with a 32-30 win over the Bayridge Blazers.

At Sharbot Lake, Clara Serrano added nine points to the Loyalist attack, while Hilary Howes scored 10 points for the Gryphons, who fell to 0-2 in their first season in the new school.

Regi denied two Bayridge possessions in the final minute to preserve the two-point victory. Bridget Mulholland, with 15 points, and Molly Dixon, with eight, accounted for 72 per cent of their team's points between them.

In one of three senior games Tuesday, Loyalist will visit La Salle in the season's first battle of undefeated teams.
