Disappointing weekend for Queen's soccer women

Queen's Golden Gaels suffered their first defeat of the Ontario University Athletics women's soccer season Sunday, when they dropped a 2-1 decision to the Toronto Blues on the upper west campus field.
It was a disappointing ending for an unproductive weekend for the No. 2-ranked Gaels, who managed just a 1-1 draw with the Ryerson Rams Saturday.
After an 0-2 start to their season, the Blues are undefeated in their last six games, and Sunday's win was their fourth in a row. Aisha Lewis scored on a rebound in the game's 24th minute and Nicki Parkes found the top right corner behind Queen's keeper Michaila Frawley 13 minutes later.
It took just a minute for the Gaels to answer with a goal by Rachel Radu but despite finishing the game with nine shots, they could not solve Toronto's Sara Petrucci again.
Tara Bartram's goal in the 77th minute of Saturday's game lifted Queen's into the tie with Ryerson. The game had been scoreless until Nicole Paiva scored eight minutes earlier for Ryerson, which is now 3-4-1 after an 0-3 start. Frawley preserved the tie in the dying moments when she tipped a high shot just enough to send it off the crossbar and away.
Queen's, 4-1-3 but winless in three games, resumes play Saturday when it hosts winless Trent.
In addition to their success against Queen's, the two Toronto teams each left town with a 1-0 win over the Royal Military College Paladins.

Queen's men scored two goals in the first half Sunday and they went on to defeat Toronto 3-1. Two long passes resulted in goals by William Twardek and Kristian Zanette. Lucas Azeredo Lobo scored Queen's other goal, heading in a cross from Zanette in the second half.
Goalkeeper Dylan Maxwell made six saves to post the victory for Queen's, which improved to 3-2-1 as Toronto fell to 1-3-1.
On Saturday, the Gaels dropped a 2-1 decision to undefeated and tenth-ranked Ryerson. After allowing an early goal, Queen's got even in the 17th minute, when David Tom headed a free kick by Joe Zupo past Rams goalkeeper Christian Maraldo.
The Rams got the go-ahead goal before halftime, and Maraldo made it stand up for Ryerson, which left town 6-0-1.
The Gaels will play at RMC, 1-4-1, Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Kingston high school products were prominent Sunday as the Queen's Golden Gaels defeated the St. Lawrence Vikings 78-48 in an exhibition intercollegiate women's basketball game Sunday at St. Lawrence.
La Salle Secondary School grad Liz Boag had 23 points for Queen's while Regiopolis Note Dame alumnus Jenny Wright scored 14. Former Frontenac Falcon Lacey Knox was the top St. Lawrence shooter, with 10 points.
