Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:
Fifty years ago today, Tuesday, Feb. 26, 1963
Wayne Connelly, has resumed skating and may be ready to play Wednesday night in an interlocking game with the International League's St. Paul Saints.
"The doctor was really surprised," Connelly told Ron Brown of the Whig-Standard. "I got my cast off four days ago and I wasn't supposed to have it removed for another two weeks."
Connelly's presence gives the Frontenacs an interesting problem, compounded by the fact that, as per a pre-season agreement, EPHL teams dress only 13 skaters for games with International league opponents. Kingston has two strong right wingers in Pete Panagabko and Gerry (Red) Ouellette, and since Connelly was injured, the team has been using Ron Willy and Jean-Paul Parise at the position.
"We're going to have to sit somebody out," playing assistant coach Harry Sinden said, "but I don't know who it will be. Everyone has been playing extremely well for the past two or three weeks."
Pat Stapleton, meanwhile, hasn't practised this week due to a toe injury, but he is expected to play Wednesday.
* With five points last week, Don Blackburn joined teammate Jeannot Gilbert atop the league scoring race. Gilbert leads the league with 77 points, while Blackburn has 72, one more than Marc Dufour of Sudbury.
* Dennis Kassian scores three times to lead the last-place St. Louis Braves to an 8-5 win over the Sudbury Wolves in Tuesday's only game. Phil Esposito scored once for St. Louis.
