Western, Guelph stay undefeated in OUA football play
Posted: October 6th, 2013 @ 1:52am
Western Mustangs remained undefeated Saturday with a 51-23 Ontario University Athletics football victory over the Windsor Lancers.
Will Finch completed 22 of 34 passes for 362 yards while Yannick Harou rushed 15 times for 110 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the No. 1-ranked Mustangs, who posted their seventh straight victory.
Playing at Windsor, Western surged to a 24-0 lead before the Lancers got on the scoreboard. The home team closed to within 14 points late in the second quarter but Lirim Hajarullahu kicked two field goals in the final two minutes of the first half to send the Mustangs into the second half with a 20-point lead.
Hajarullah finished the game with 17 points and school records for scoring and field goals in a career. With one game left in the regular schedule, Hajarullah has 402 points, just eight less than all-time CIS scoring leader Neil Lumsden.
Western held Windsor to just 20 yards rushing. Evan Pszoczonak had eight catches for Windsor for 126 yards.
The win enabled Western to stay two points of second-place Guelph, which won its sixth game without defeat Friday night, 33-7 over the York Lions, and four points ahead of the Queen's Golden Gaels, who escaped with a 40-34 overtime win over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks before 9,037 Homecoming fans in Kingston.
That win clinched at least a third-place finish for Queen's, 5-1 with two games remaining to play. Windsor and Ottawa, 35-10 Saturday over the Carleton Ravens in the first Panda Game in 15 years, are tied for fourth place at 4-3 with one game left. The best either of them can do is tie Queen's in points, but the Gaels would prevail in either case for having beaten both Ottawa and Windsor this year.
In Saturday's other game, the McMaster Marauders climbed back to .500 with a 66-3 romp over the Waterloo Warriors.
Playing before a Homecoming crowd of 5,423 in Hamilton, Marauders quarterback Marshall Ferguson was 23-31 for 309 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. Eight different McMaster receivers caught passes, among them Ferguson's old Frontenac Secondary School teammate Ben O'Connor, who had a season-best four catches for 75 yards.
Tyler Loveday and Kaesan Davis-Reynolds each had two touchdowns for McMaster, which racked up 664 yards of offence while holding the Warriors to just 172 total yards.
Wayne Moore, a rookie with 60 yards from nine carries through the first five games of the season, had nine carries for 125 yards for the Marauders, 116 yards of it in the second half.
Before a capacity crowd of 3,500 at Ottawa U, the winless Ravens put a scare into the Gee-Gees when Tunde Adeleke returned a missed Lewis Ward field goal 129 yards for a second-quarter touchdown, cutting Carleton's deficit to 14-10.
Just 13 seconds before the first half ended Ottawa answered with a six-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Colbon to Andrew Mullings.
Of Ottawa's 651 yards of offence, 356 yards came along the ground. Brendan Gillanders rushed 17 times for 164 yards to lead the assault.
Colbon completed 21 of 29 passes for 295 yards. Simon LeMarquand caught two of them for touchdowns while Ian Stewart had seven receptions for 100 yards.
Friday night at Guelph, the Gryphons led 20-0 before the Lions finally scored in the game's 47th minute. York was held to the solitary score despite gaining 383 total yards.
Rob Farquharson carried 20 times for 129 yards and two touchdowns for Guelph. Gryphons quarterback Jazz Lindsey was 17-for-30 for 296 yards, including a 92-yard pass to Dillon Dimitroff that didn't end up in the end zone.
Guelph's offensive line allowed neither a sack nor a tackle for loss, while the Gryphons made nine plays in the York backfield, two sacks and seven tackles for loss.
Play resumes Thursday when the Toronto Blues, 2-4 coming off their bye week, visit York, also 2-4. In a pair of games involving teams going in opposite directions Friday, Queen's, 5-1, will visit Waterloo, 1-5, while Carleton, 0-6, will host Guelph, 6-0. Saturday Laurier, 1-6, will close its schedule against McMaster, 3-3. Western, Ottawa and Windsor all get the week off.

In the Atlantic conference Saturday, a Homecoming crowd of 4,200 in Antigonish watched the St. Francis Xavier X-Men improve to 3-2 with a 30-9 win over the Mount Allison Mounties. Chris Shibley had an interception for the X-Men, while his former Sydenham High School teammate Hayden Peters punted for a 39.1-yard average. Related Articles:
