La Salle improves to 7-1 with girls basketball win over Frontenac

La Salle Black Knights prevented a logjam from forming in second place Thursday afternoon when they defeated the Frontenac Falcons 46-33 in Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association senior girls basketball play at La Salle.
The Knights entered the game 6-1 and the Falcons 5-1, and had the outcome been reversed the teams would have ended the day tied with idle Holy Cross, each with 12 points, four behind league-leading Regiopolis Notre Dame.
As it was, La Salle led by three points, 23-20, at halftime but the Knights then raced to a 34-22 lead in the third quarter. Frontenac fought back with a 9-of-11 run to trail by just five points, 36-31, with five minutes to play.
Kristin Treitz then forced a pair of turnovers, both of which became easy baskets for Sarah Beech, restoring to La Salle a nine-point cushion that they rode to victory.
Erica McDade ended the game with back-to-back three-pointers for the Knights.
Beech finished as the game's high scorer, with 16 points, while McDade scored 11. Anne Wagar scored 10 points for Frontenac, which lost for the second game in a row after a 5-0 start.
Elsewhere Thursday, the Bayridge Blazers won for the second game in a row, 38-23 over the Ernestown Eagles.
Playing in Odessa, Alex Leggett scored 11 points for Bayridge, which moved to within a game of .500 at 3-4.
Though Emily Stenson led all scorers with 12 points - more than half her team's production - the winless Eagles couldn't avoid their seventh consecutive defeat.
In next week's marquee game, Regi will visit Holy Cross Thursday afternoon for a 1:30 game. Both teams will be idle until then.
