Soccer women will host Laurentian in Wednesday quarter-final

Posted: October 20th, 2013 @ 9:44pm

Queen's Golden Gaels will host the Laurentian Voyageurs Wednesday afternoon in an Ontario University Athletics East division women's soccer quarter-final on the upper West Campus field.

The Gaels, who concluded their regular schedule with a pair of ties on the weekend, finished the season 7-2-7, good for fourth place in the division, three points ahead of Laurentian, which was one game behind Queen's at 6-3-7.

Though the Gaels won just seven of their 16 matches, they allowed just 12 goals; only two teams in the province allowed fewer. In the season series with Laurentian, Queen's had a 3-0 victory at Sudbury in September and a scoreless draw at home Friday.

On Sunday, Queen's closed its schedule with a 2-2 home-field tie with the Nipissing Lakers. The teams traded goals in the first seven minutes of play and the Gaels led 2-1 at halftime. Sara Dorval scored her second goal of the season in the game's 60th minute to give the visitors a share of the tie and a final log of 4-7-5 for the season, good for sixth place in the division.

Jennifer Siu and Kyra Steer scored for Queen's.

The Gaels outshot Laurentian 7-3 on Friday but they could not solve Voyageurs goalkeeper Richele Greenwood. Michaila Frawley was similarly flawless tending the Queen's goal.

Laurentian and Queen's also fought to a 0-0 tie in the varsity men's game Friday.
