Queen's fourth in final Top 10 football poll
Posted: October 30th, 2013 @ 12:39am
Western Mustangs head into their conference semifinal Saturday as the No. 1-ranked university football team in Canada. The Mustangs, who will host the McMaster Marauders, were ranked first for the fifth week in a row in the final poll of the season released Tuesday by Canadian Interuniversity Sport.
Western is one of three undefeated teams in the land. The Mustangs received 290 points and 20 first-place votes from the 30 members of the Football Reporters of Canada who take part in the poll.
Quebec regular-season champion Laval, which held the No. 1 spot for the first five weeks of the season - and slipped out of first place despite not suffering defeat - Â received the other 10 first-place votes.
Calgary, which, like Western and Laval finished its regular schedule 8-0, remains third.
Queen's Golden Gaels, who will host Guelph in the other Ontario University Athletics semifinal Saturday, are fourth for the second week in a row.
The only change in the Top 10 came in the middle, where Bishop's, with its win over McGill, and Montreal, which lost to Laval, swapped spots. The Gaiters moved to No. 6 to be ranked one place ahead of the Carabins, even though Montreal beat Bishop's in their only regular-season meeting.
As has been the case for nine of the 10 polls this year, no team from the Atlantic conference is ranked.
This week's national Top 10, with previous rank, record, points in voting, last week's result and this week's conference semifinal opponent:
1. Western (1), 8-0, 290 points, was idle; next: Saturday, vs. No. 8 McMaster.
