Queen's wins OUA women's soccer bronze medal
Posted: November 4th, 2013 @ 12:56am
Queen's Golden Gaels ended their Ontario University Athletics women's soccer season Sunday afternoon by winning the bronze medal at the conference championship tournament in London.
The Gaels defeated the Carleton Ravens 1-0 after a shootout where Queen's prevailed 4-2.
Michah Vermeer, Alexis McKinty, Alex Blanchard and Tara Bartram scored shootout goals for the Gaels, who lost their semifinal game at the tournament Friday in a shootout to Western.
Queen's advanced to the tournament after a shootout win over Ottawa, the nation's second-ranked team, in the East division semifinals.
The Mustangs, who were undefeated and the No. 1-ranked team in Canada, then lost the championship match Sunday to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, also 1-0, also after a shootout. Western and Laurier will both advance to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship tournament, starting Thursday in Toronto.
In four playoff games, Queen's sophomore goalkeeper Madison Tyrell, a fine arts student from White Rock, B.C., did not allow a goal in regulation time or overtime. Unfortunately for the Gaels, neither did they score a pre-shootout goal in the last three of those games.
This will be the first time in five years that Queen's has not played in the CIS tournament. In 2009 the Gaels finished fourth. They followed that with back-to-back national championships, 2010-11, and they won the silver medal - losing the gold-medal game in a shootout - a year ago. Related Articles:
