Jay Dearborn enjoys successful season in Maritimes
Posted: November 15th, 2013 @ 8:22pm
Jay Dearborn, a Sydenham High School grad from Yarker playing football at Holland College in Charlottetown, P.E.I., was selected the school's male athlete of the week for his role in the Hurricanes' victory in the Atlantic Football League championship game Nov. 2.
Dearborn, a freshman at the island community college, kicked a pair of field goals and had a crucial interception in the fourth quarter, leading the Hurricanes to a 20-12 win over the Seawolves of the University of New Brunswick at Saint John.
The victory capped a remarkable season for the Hurricanes, who went through a 1-4-1 regular season before posting consecutive playoff victories over Dalhousie - Dearborn had two interceptions in that game - and regular-season champion UNB-Saint John to claim the school's second league title in three years.
A student in the energy systems technology program, Dearborn kicked field goals of 35 and 27 yards and punted for a 39-yard average. One of those punts went through the end zone for a single point.
His late-game interception deep in Hurricanes territory snuffed a drive by UNB-Saint John, which, trailing by five points at that point, was threatening to take the lead. After an 80-yard Holland drive Dearborn kicked his second field goal of the game to boost the lead to eight points.
Dearborn is the first club-team athlete to be honoured as Holland's player of the week, a distinction usually reserved for players on varsity teams.
The Atlantic Football League is a four-team league - the UNB-Fredericton Red Bombers is the fourth - and though Holland is the only college team in it, the Hurricanes include several players who attend the University of Prince Edward Island. There is also a large contingent of players from the Bahamas and nine players from Ontario on the Hurricanes' roster.
Dearborn, a member of Sydenham's Ontario high school silver-medal 1,600-metre relay team last June, played junior football with the Kingston Grenadiers of the Ontario Varsity Football League. Related Articles:
