Frontenac to face Lorne Park in OFSAA bowl football game

Posted: November 17th, 2013 @ 7:19pm

Frontenac Falcons will face the Lorne Park Spartans of Mississauga in an OFSAA bowl football game Tuesday, Nov. 26, in Toronto.

Lorne Park defeated St. Joan of Arc 26-7 Friday to win the senior Tier I championship of the Region of Peel.

It was the 18th conference title for Lorne Park, most in Peel history.

The Spartans have sent a host of players to play university football, including Mike Boone, Doug Corbett and Mike Douglas to Queen's. Another Lorne Park alumnus, Klaus Wilmsmeyer, had a seven-year career as a punter in the National Football League with San Francisco, Miami and New Orleans.

Frontenac won the Eastern Ontario AAA championship last week with a 34-7 win over the Thousand Island Pirates in Brockville.

In recent years, the Kingston Area champion would have played one other regional game to qualify for the National Capital Bowl, one of five provincial contests typically held in the Rogers Centre in Toronto. Funding problems, however, forced the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations to abandon the one-day indoor festival in favour of eight games over three days involving 15 area champions, with an additional team from the Toronto public board as a so-called host to complete the draw.

Opponents for the eight games were drawn randomly. The EOSSA-Peel game is the first of the series, and it will be played at 11:30 a.m. at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke.
