Queen's gains split of women's hockey weekend series

Queen's Golden Gaels rebounded nicely from their first regulation loss of the Ontario University Athletics women's hockey season Sunday afternoon, when they defeated the Western Mustangs 2-1 in a shootout.
Taryn Pilon was the only one of five shooters to score in the round of penalty shots as the No. 3-ranked Gaels improved to 9-1-3.
The win followed a 6-3 loss to the Windsor Lancers Saturday night in Windsor.
Playing in London, Jessica Wakefield scored the game's first goal for Queen's in the first minute of the third period. Cassidy Gosling replied for Western seven minutes later and there was no more scoring through the remainder of regulation time and a five-minute overtime.
In the shootout Pilon was the first shooter to score and her goal stood up when Gaels goaltender Mel Dodd-Moher denied all three Western shooters.
Queen's outshot No. 10-ranked Western 44-32, including 6-3 in overtime as the Mustangs fell to 7-4-1.
Morgan McHaffie scored once and assisted on the other two Queen's goals Saturday but it wasn't enough to prevent the Gaels from being beaten at Windsor, where the Lancers got three goals from Erinn Noseworthy en route to improving their record to 6-5-1.
Pilon had a goal and an assist for Queen's, which got its other goal from Wakefield, one that gave the Gaels a short-lived 2-1 lead early in the second period. The Lancers led 3-2 going into the third period and three goals in a span of just over three minutes in the middle part of that stanza sealed the Gaels' fate.
The Gaels will hit the road again next weekend, for games Saturday at Laurentian and Sunday at Nipissing.
