Rideau perfect after two games at single-A OFSAA

Posted: November 21st, 2013 @ 10:37pm

Rideau District Lions are 2-0 after the first day of play at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations girls single-A basketball championship in Sault Ste. Marie.

The Lions defeated St. Thomas Aquinas of Lindsay 57-33 Thursday night, after posting a 46-15 win over Nelson A. Boylen of Toronto in the afternoon.

Rideau, the No. 2 seed at the 16-team tournament, will play Monseigneur-Bruyere of London in a quarter-final game Friday morning at 11:30. Bruyere, the 13th-seeded team at the competition, is also undefeated after two games.

Leah Rice scored 15 points in the night game to lead Rideau, which scored 26 points in the first quarter and led by 16 after eight minutes of play against Aquinas.

In the game against Boylen, the Lions similarly came roaring out of the gate, leading 17-5 after the first quarter. A stifling defence then prevented Boylen, the tournament's 12th-seeded team, from scoring at all in the second quarter and held it to just two points in the third.
