Queen's basketball teams split at Laurentian

Posted: January 18th, 2014 @ 12:02am

Jenny Wright scored a season-best 27 points Friday night to lead the Queen's Golden Gaels to a 63-60 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs in an Ontario University Athletics women's basketball game in Sudbury.

Wright's previous best was 25 points at York Nov. 29. The Regiopolis Notre Dame grad, averaging 11.3 points per game going into Friday's contest, was 9-for-19 from the field, 4-for-7 from three-point range and 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.

The win halted a two-game losing streak for the Gaels, who improved to 8-5 and moved to within half a game of second-place Ottawa in the East division. The Gee-Gees lost 52-45 at home Friday night to Toronto.

Queen's took a 16-13 lead by the end of the first quarter but scored just eight points in the second, as Laurentian, 3-9, took a 25-24 halftime lead. The game was tied, 41-41, going into the fourth quarter.

Liz Boag scored 13 points and had five assists for the Gaels, while Robyn Pearson had a game-best 13 rebounds.

Adrienne Moreau, who hadn't scored more than 14 points in a game all season, led Laurentian with 27 points, while Emma Decloe scored 17.

Saturday, the Gaels will travel to Sault Ste. Marie to play the Algoma Thunderbirds, who are winless in their first season of OUA competition.

Queen's men continued to have trouble defending Friday night, as they dropped an 84-76 decision to Laurentian.

The Gaels, who twice this year have given up more than 90 points in a game, allowed an opponent to score more than 80 for the third time in four games since returning from the Christmas break.

The loss leaves the Gaels, 7-6, in sixth place in the East division. Fourth-place Laurentian improved to 9-4.

Queen's led by three points after a 21-point first quarter but the Gaels stumbled in the second, scoring just 14 points and falling behind 49-45 by halftime. Laurentian led 69-62 going into the final period and a 24-point fourth quarter did the Gaels no good because they couldn't prevent the home team from scoring 25.

Greg Faulkner had 28 points, six rebounds and five steals for Queen's, all team bests.

Nikola Misljencevic, Roshane Roberts and Sukhpreet Singh scored 10 points apiece for the Gaels, who lost for the third time in their last four games.

Nelson Yengue had 22 points, the best of four Voyageurs who hit double figures. Tychon Carter-Newman scored 17 points and pulled down a season-best 11 rebounds.

Saturday the Gaels will play Algoma, which is 3-10 in its maiden season of university ball.
