Chris Clarke posts shutout as hockey Gaels end losing streak at Concordia

Apparently tired of losing, the Queen's Golden Gaels erupted for four first-period goals Saturday afternoon and they rode them to a 4-0 victory over the Concordia Stingers in Ontario University Athletics hockey play in Montreal.
The Gaels, who made it through the first 17 games of the season without a defeat in regulation time, had lost three in a row through a 2-1 setback Friday night at McGill.
Saturday afternoon, it took less than five minutes for Corey Bureau to open scoring for Queen's. It was the captain's fourth goal of the year, but just his second since Nov. 15.
Then little-used Yannick Laflamme unwittingly did his team a favour when he took an interference penalty midway through the first period. Before the penalty was over, the Gaels had a pair of shorthanded goals, by Joey Derochie and Patrick McGillis.
McGillis later added a power-play goal, his eighth of the year, on Stingers goaltender Antonio Mastropietro, who surrendered the four goals on just 10 Queen's shots.
In two games last weekend, Mastropietro allowed just three goals as the Stingers swept a two-game series in northern Ontario. This weekend, Concordia, 6-10-3, was shutout twice in a row at home, losing the two games by a combined score of 10-0.
Saturday's game was scoreless in the final 41 minutes. Chris Clarke made 24 stops for the shutout, as Queen's ended up outshooting the home team 26-24. In his first start since Jan. 5, Clarke, a freshman from Fall River, N.S., improved to 4-1 and lowered his goals-against average to 1.72.
The win enabled the No.10-ranked Gaels to stay within two points of the East division-leading McGill Redmen, who Saturday night defeated the Royal Military College Paladins 7-2, and one point behind Trois-Rivieres, a 5-1 winner Saturday at Ontario Tech. Queen's, 13-3-5, has sole possession of third place, two points ahead of idle Carleton.
Goals by Patrick Delisle-Houde and Carl Gelinas 36 seconds apart midway through the first period broke open a one-goal game for McGill. Three goals in the first eight minutes of the second period, the last a shorthanded tally by Max Le Sieur, put the Redmen ahead 6-0 before the game was half over.
Scott McDonald scored for RMC before that penalty expired but the Paladins never really threatened. They allowed another goal in the final minute of the period - for the 10th time this year - and Frederic Thouin's first goal of the year for RMC was the only score of the third period.
McGill outshot the Paladins 58-20, including 21-3 in the first period.
Queen's and RMC, 1-17-3, resume play Tuesday, when they will meet at the Constantine Arena. Game time is 7 p.m.
