Women win, men lose as basketball Gaels split at Algoma

Jenny Wright scored 16 points and Liz Boag added 15 Saturday night as the Queen's Golden Gaels defeated the Algoma Thunderbirds 54-34 in Ontario University Athletics women's basketball play in Sault Ste. Marie.
The Gaels scored 19 points in the first quarter and led 33-15 at halftime en route to their second win in their weekend tour of northern Ontario. For Queen's, 9-5, it was the seventh win in the last nine games.
Karissa Kajorinne had nine points - one off her season best - and six rebounds for Algoma, which, in its first season of university play, fell to 0-14.

For the fourth time in five games since the Christmas break, the Queen's men allowed an opponent to score more than 80 points - this time including 30 in the fourth quarter - and it cost them an 83-76 loss to Algoma.
Their defensive play in the final 10 minutes rendered moot the 31 points the Gaels scored in the final period trying to overcome an eight-point deficit.
With the loss, Queen's slipped to 7-7 and missed an opportunity to move into a fifth-place tie with York, 86-85 loser Saturday at Laurentian.
Algoma scored 16 points off 13 Queen's turnovers and led by as much as 15 points midway through the third quarter. In improving to 4-10, the Thunderbirds snapped an eight-game losing streak.
The Gaels, who lost for the fourth time in five games since the break, got 17 points apiece from Nikola Misljencevic and Sukhpreet Singh, 14 points from Roshane Roberts, 13 points and a game-best 11 rebounds from Mackenzie Simpson and 13 points from Greg Faulkner before he fouled out of the game.
Reynaldo Carnakle scored 19 points for Algoma, Samy Mohammed scored 18 and Terrell Campbell 16 for the Thunderbirds.
Queen's resumes play Friday against the No. 1-ranked Carleton Ravens in Ottawa.
