Queen's women lose a heart-breaker; men waxed at Carleton

A pair of successful free-throws with four-tenths of a second left on the clock gave the Carleton Ravens a 57-55 victory over the Queen's Golden Gaels Friday night in an Ontario University Athletics women's basketball game in Ottawa.After falling behind 19-12 in the first quarter, Queen's had a three-point lead at halftime and the Gaels led by eight points, 44-36, going into the final period. Carleton, however, exploded for 21 fourth-quarter points to improve their East division-leading record to 11-4.The Gaels, losers of three of their last five games, fell to 9-6. They will resume play Saturday night at Ottawa, the other team sharing top spot in the division at 11-4.In winning for the seventh time in their last eight games, the Ravens got 16 points and 14 rebounds off the bench, both season bests, from Lindsey Suprunchuk. Elizabeth Roach also scored 16 points for Carleton on a night when she was 8-for-10 from the free-throw line.Gemma Bullard, 8-for-8 from the line, led all scorers with 19 points for Queen's. Jenny Wright scored 12.* * *The No. 1-ranked Carleton Ravens had their way with the Queen's men Friday night, scoring 55 points in the first half on their way to a 104-65 victory, their 15th without defeat in conference play this year.The Ravens kept their foot on the gas throughout, scoring 30 points in the fourth quarter.Sophomore Patrick Street came off the bench to lead Queen's with 14 points, his first double-digit performance of the season. Greg Faulkner added 12 points and Sukhpreet Singh 11 for the Gaels, who lost for the fifth time in their last six games to fall to 7-8.Philip Scrubb scored 23 points for Carleton, while Clinton Springer-Williams added 17 and Kevin Churchill scored 14. Kingston's Brody Maracle, the Holy Cross Secondary School grad in his freshman season with the Ravens, scored four points in six minutes of playing time.Winner of nine of the last 11 national championships, Carleton scored on 60 per cent of its shots from the field (36-for-60) and 60.7 of its shots from beyond the three-point arc (17-for-28).The Gaels needn't feel too bad. It was the fifth time this year - the third time in the last four games - Carleton has surpassed 100 points - and the seventh time in 15 games they've won by 35 points or more. The Ravens' average margin of victory in league play is 34.2 points.Things don't get a whole lot easier Saturday night for the Gaels, who will visit the No. 2-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees. At 13-2, the only games the Gee-Gees have lost this year have been to Carleton.
